4 Things We Love About Coconut Oil!

4 things we love about coconut oil

Find out why this amazing food is so powerful.

With all the health food crazes out there, it’s sometimes easy to overlook the good, simple foods that power our bodies better than any others. One of these often overlooked foods is coconut oil. For something that seems so basic, it actually packs quite the nutritional punch. Check out the top four reasons to fall in love with coconut oil.

The mythical MCT

You may have heard of MCT oil before. It is rising in popularity because of its ability to deliver energy straight to the bloodstream. However, you may not have known that coconut oil actually contains MCT within its structure. So what is MCT, and what does it actually do for us?

MCT stands for medium-chain triglyceride. They’re called medium-chain because their aliphatic tail is between 6 and 12 carbon atoms. Since they are so much smaller than long-chain triglycerides, they are much easier to absorb. This give our bodies energy without needing to use any energy to access it.

MCT’s have also been shown to help with weight loss, because they can increase fat oxidation as well as reducing hunger signalling. It is a very powerful compound and can be found readily in coconut oil.

Great to cook with

Coconut oil is an excellent replacement for that greasy old bottle of vegetable oil sitting in the back of your cabinet. First of all, any oil in vegetable oil is going to be hydrogenated, whereas coconut oil is not. Hydrogenation is the food industry’s way of saying that something is “almost” a trans fat. While a hydrogenated fat isn’t quite as bad as a trans fat, it is only a step away, and can be nearly as damaging to your body.

Besides being healthier, coconut oil is great to cook with because it has a relatively high smoke point, which means you can use it to fry up some eggs without having that nasty burnt oil smell in your house. Also, coconut oil can add a bit of natural sweetness to your food that won’t overpower the other flavors.

It is naturally satiating

Since coconut oil is a fat, it can be very filling while still using minimal amounts. If you’re a coffee drinker, do yourself a favor and plop a tablespoon of coconut oil in your morning coffee. Not only will it fill you up and get you through the morning struggle, but it will also inject some natural, fiery energy into the early part of your day.

Since it fills you up, you won’t be inclined to snack away like you usually would. In fact, you won’t even think about food. Your body absorbs it so readily that you don’t even have time to think of food before it is filling you up. It is a secret weapon in the fight against overeating.

It’s got the good cholesterol

For decades the word cholesterol has been a hot button in the health industry. Everyone is terrified of high cholesterol. However, not all cholesterol is bad. You want to stay away from LDL, but HDL is actually a very necessary and beneficial part of our diet. It is used to maintain the structure of our cellular walls, and helps to keep the proper fluidity between cells. Without enough cholesterol, our cells would literally fall apart. I don’t know about you, but that sounds painful.

It also helps our bodies use hormones, which regulate every function in our bodies from mood to muscle growth. If we couldn’t use our hormones properly, we wouldn’t be able to function normally.

In short, coconut oil is a very important addition to your diet, and can do many things for your general health that you may never have thought of. Give it a try and see how you feel.
